How does the SoClean CPAP sanitiser work?

The SoClean uses activated oxygen (a natural disinfectant), known as Ozone. SoClean uses the same sanitising process as hospitals and that used for water purification.

After setting up your SoClean, the device pumps the generated Ozone through the SoClean supply tube and into the reservoir, sanitising the walls and water of your humidifier (if not empty). The Ozone travels through your CPAP hose, eliminating bacteria in all the small crevices. Soon after, the Ozone reaches your CPAP mask, powerfully sanitising every part. The process is completed within a five to fifteen minute run time.

Finally, during the device’s 2-hour resting period – the activated oxygen (Ozone) exits the chamber through a filter that converts any excess Ozone back into breathable oxygen – Safe and simple.

You can also use a ‘neutralising prewash‘; this is a liquid that you can mix with water to remove any odours from your CPAP equipment before using your SoClean.

Please note if you use a humidifier to activate the cleaning process, you may need an adaptor. To learn more about adaptors and compatibility, take a look at our SoClean Adapters.

The Phillips Recall: Is SoClean 2 safe to use?

The simple answer is yes. It is safe to use.

The 2021 a Phillps Respironics recall majorly affected the reputation of the SoClean Inc. cleaning device. Phillips claimed that “cleaning methods such as Ozone may have contributed to foam degradation” in the DreamStation devices they had to recall. Although never proven, this claim affected the reputation of the SoClean device. At the time, SoClean responded with this statement:

“While it was suggested the foam degradation may be exacerbated by using an ozone cleaner, almost 90% of the products being recalled have no connection to an ozone cleaning device. The lawsuits have not been properly investigated, have no basis in fact, and are without any legal merit.”

SoClean

SoClean is supported by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) who further provided this statement:

“Although the use of ozone cleaners by device users may have exacerbated the degradation of the PE-PUR foam, evidence indicates that the unreasonable risk associated with the products was not caused by the use of ozone cleaning agents, nor did the use of ozone to clean the products constitute a failure to exercise due care” – May 2022.

FDA

To summarise, SoClean is a safe and effective way to sanitise your CPAP equipment.
